Helping communities and organizations to make complex decisions collectively and using consensus methods
Activities
The Consensus Building Institute (CBI) has worked with dozens of partners, including major corporations, government agencies, local and regional organizations, international groups, non-profits and educational institutions. CBI’s project work focuses on all phases of disputes and conflict resolution, including identifying and mapping the problem; to engaging stakeholders and facilitating discussions; developing alternatives; providing training in consensus-building techniques; and evaluating success. CBI also conducts research in the field, produces publications and reports, and works to expand the field of participatory decision-making.
Relevant Project(s)
- Assessment of Route 22 Expansion Proposal in upstate NY. CBI addressed issues of land use, community character, infrastructure, and community development, while also helping to move the region’s decision-making process from one of home-rule legislation to one of cooperation across boundaries.
- Fire Island National Seashore Off-Road Rules. CBI helped the National Seashore, residents, and other stakeholders develop regulations for off-road driving to ensure services for residents and environmental protection.
- Lincoln Institute for Land Use Planning and CBI have partnered for six years to offer courses in land use dispute resolution and mediation.
- The Highland Communities Initiative in western Massachusetts partnered with CBI to start community roundtable discussions on how and where the region should grow, as well as how to direct land conservation.
Relevant Methodologies
One of CBI’s more interesting methods is to develop simulations around a particular conflict or planning need, which help clients to practice negotiation skills in realistic situations. In addition, CBI uses more typical consensus-building techniques like community discussions, role-playing, and negotiation techniques.
