NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION

An advocacy organization focused on implementation, providing resources and information to communities for protection of historic resources and community character.

Activities

The National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) seeks to “save historic neighborhoods and protect the authentic sense of place by rehabilitating vacant or declining buildings and turning them into vibrant new homes and other viable new uses for them.” The Trust carries out research and publication activities in addition to supporting specific projects and advocating for policies and legislation that protect historic resources, and also provides consulting services.

Relevant Project(s)

  • Travel tours bring people to the special places that the Trust has worked to preserve over the years, highlighting the places themselves as well as the methods that have helped to revitalize them.
  • National Main Street Center assists communities with revitalization centered on vibrant main streets. The program includes membership and resources for participating communities, a conference, training and certifications, and awards.
  • National Preservation Endowment provides funds to governments, non-profits, companies, and organizations working on specific preservation-related projects.

Relevant Methodologies

NTHP methods include education, models and resources, publications, and community evaluation techniques. The organization publishes how-to guides and case studies for specific projects, as well as success stories and general guides for revitalization and historic places. Financial assistance can be used to support specific projects or larger initiatives like hurricane recovery and creation of historic districts. The Trust also serves an advocacy role, lobbying for legislation and policies that support preservation and community revitalization, and provides many resources for individuals and communities looking to improve the local environment.

The National Main Street Center has pioneered a separate methodology for main street revitalization, called the Main Street Four Point Approach™. The approach structures revitalization around organization, promotion, design, and economic restructuring.
