TRUST FOR PUBLIC LAND

A national land trust and conservation organization dedicating to people-centered conservation.

Activities

The Trust for Public Land’s (TPL) national offices work to conserve land (from wilderness areas to empty city lots and community gardens); to expose people to conserved land and outdoor recreation; to address environmental justice issues relating to green spaces and conservation; and to lobby for related issues at the national level. TPL conducts research on many topics as well, which helps to support its other programs and initiatives. A significant focus of the organization’s work is in identifying, protecting, and improving people’s connections with special places.

Relevant Project(s)

  • The mission of TPL's Center for Land and People is to foster the connection between people and special places, explore why this connection is so important, and “make the case that conservation in the 21st century must include a sharper focus on the interrelationship of land, people, and community.” The Center's activities include research, publishing, and on-the-ground experimentation in projects that attempt to link people, place and community.
  • The Heritage Lands Conservation Initiative seeks to conserve (through outright purchase, legislation, or conservation easements) places with important historical or cultural significance. TPL believes that these lands “keep us in touch with our past and who we are as a people,” and feels that they will “teach the American story for generations to come.”

Relevant Methodologies

TPL’s primary methodologies include creative financing (for purchase and protection of lands and related programs); publicity and education; and community outreach.
