Activities
ACP integrates visioning and physical planning to provide a broad range of services to cities, counties, and regions across the country, including: visioning and public involvement, strategic planning, comprehensive planning, urban design, and development regulations.
Relevant Projects
- Upper Arlington (Ohio) comprehensive plan update process included 17 public meetings with hundreds of participants, resulting in nearly 900 ideas for community change and improvement. The community reached a consensus on the future of land use in the area after ACP’s two-day Community Choices workshop.
- Norfolk (Virginia) worked with ACP to consider improvements to existing residential neighborhoods that could help those areas compete with new subdivisions and suburban developments. Ideas included niche marketing for the city’s neighborhoods, which could help create character and retain current residents.
- Knoxville (Tennessee) Nine Counties. One Vision. The project engaged more than 6000 people from nine counties in creating a comprehensive vision for the region, as well as developing specific ideas, action strategies, and implementation steps. The project is now completed, but several task forces remain engaged in implementation activities throughout the area, including creation of a regional community festival that will celebrate Tennessee’s cultural heritage.
Relevant Methodologies
ACP Places citizens at the heart of planning through meaningful public participation; uses visual and verbal communication techniques to make the planning process intuitive and informed; and uses ownership and coalition-building to ensure long-term stewardship and implementation of plans. ACP has developed a process that consists of a series of public meetings, designed to bring together a diverse constituency and enable sound decision-making. The process emphasizes planning that combines visioning and values with strong information and technology resources.
